The following links provide information and resources on teaching children to read. Right Track Reading encourages parents and teachers to explore these sites and to research additional information on teaching children to read, the science of proficient reading, and on the proven effectiveness of direct systematic phonics.
Report of the National Reading Panel “Teaching Children to Read” - This summary report outlines the findings of the panel’s evidence based assessment of the scientific research literature on reading. This panel adopted rigorous research methodological standards in screening the research literature. Big Ideas in Beginning Reading - University of Oregon - This excellent site contains information on effectively teaching all children to read. The Big Ideas goal is “All children reading by the end of 3rd grade”. This website includes reliance on validated research. In addition to general information, this website also contains detailed information that would be helpful for teachers and other professional educators. http://reading.uoregon.edu/
The National Right to Read Foundation - This organization’s mission is to return comprehensive, scientifically-based reading instruction and good literature to every elementary school in America. This excellent site provides many informative articles and links. www.nrrf.org
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Reading Report Card - Use this site to find out the percentage of children proficient in reading in your state. Note: Look at actual % of students within each achievement level, not the comparisons to average to determine actual success in teaching children to read. www.nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/reading
NIFL - National Institute for Literacy: The State of Literacy in America - This government site estimates and discusses the adult literacy rates in America. Look at the ‘The state of literacy in America’ to find the literacy rates in your local area or state. www.nifl.gov/nifl/faqs.html
The National Library of Medicine - National Institue of Health NCBI - This government web based literature retrieval/search system PubMed and PubMed Central provide access to and information on numerous research articles and journal citations. The Partnership for Reading: Bringing Scientific Evidence to Learning - This government website is a collaborative effort by three federal agencies - the National Institute for Literacy, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the US Department of Education. The purpose of the Partnership for Reading is to bring the findings of evidence-based reading research to the educational community, families, and others with an interest in helping all people learn to read well. It summarizes findings of the NRP, suggests practical application and answers questions. (Right Track Reading also recommends this version for parents, as the parent’s publication does not contain sufficient detail.) This is available in HMTL format or PDF format. A print version can also be ordered.
The Center for Development- The CDL is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing school success for all children. CDL specializes in the development and dissemination of research, knowledge, and best practices related to educational success. This informative site contains resources helpful for parents, teachers and others involved in educating children. Society for Quality Education - The SQE is a Canadian non-profit organization whose mission is to provide facts arising from research about quality education.
